Birthstones

The dedicating of a special stone to each month of the year was first suggested in the 1st century A.D., and was linked to the twelve stones in the High Priest’s breastplate. The custom of wearing such stones became popular in the 18th century. It started in Poland and then spread throughout Europe and the rest of the world.

Lore and legends

Superstition, myth, and romance, have been attached to crystals since ancient times. In Persian mythology the world is said to stand on a giant sapphire, the reflection of which colours the skies blue. Emeralds were once thought to blind snakes, and wondrous medicinal properties have been given to diamonds. Rubies were symbols of power and romance in the Middle Ages, and ladies often presented jewels to their knights as love tokens. Many specific stones are said to have been put under a terrible curse and stories are told of how some, such as the Hope Diamond, bring disaster to their owners.
